Article Name: Plant a Tree
Subject:  Shade  . . . the cool spot

If you have an open space in your front or back yard, how about planting a shade tree this month?  The selection is always the best in the spring but we generally have a large selection most of the season.  Most home owners procrastinate too long to be able to appreciate how valuable shade can be to nature and the environment.

When choosing a tree for shade in Northern Michigan you can't beat the growth habits and the seasonal rewards of an Acer, aka maple. An all time favorite is the Crimson King, which offers large burgundy leaves all season long and grows 45 to 50 feet.  A similar maple called deborah buds out the same color and slowly turns a dark green.  Another is the red sunset maple that brightens up the fall with very red leaves, before falling to the ground.   This variety will stand full and tall at 60'.  Other outstanding maple varieties are Emerald Queen, Legacy and Columnar, each having characteristics that will benefit any shade desires.

Have a space for shade, come take a drive to Lappan's today.
